Surabaya, 2 October 2024 - Students of Universitas 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya (UNTAG Surabaya) have created a unique food product innovation in the framework of the Merdeka Campus Competition Programme (PKKM) in the field of entrepreneurship. They utilised banana peels, which are often considered waste, into healthy and economical cracker products. This innovation not only aims to reduce organic waste but also provide added value to the local food sector. The team of five UNTAG Surabaya students innovated in utilising banana peels as a base for crackers that are rich in fibre and nutritious. The brand name for this cracker product is krupuku. In addition, the process of making these crackers involves processing banana peels to produce a crunchy and delicious product. This product is expected to attract market interest because in addition to being environmentally friendly, this banana peel cracker is also processed without preservatives.
"As students, we want to create products that are not only innovative but also have a positive impact on the environment. By processing banana peels that are usually thrown away, we can reduce organic waste and create healthy food products," said one of the team members. The price offered is also very affordable, so it can be reached by various groups. In addition, the banana peel cracker product also attracts attention because of the uniqueness of the basic ingredients that are different from other cracker products in general. Through this PKKM programme, UNTAG Surabaya students not only get the opportunity to develop their entrepreneurial skills, but also become pioneers of environmentally friendly innovations in the food industry. The PKKM programme is expected to continue to spur students to innovate and create creative solutions that benefit society and the environment.
