Combining Korea-Indonesia Culture through Buchaechum’s Costume

Korean pop has become a trend among teenagers in Indonesia and the entire world. Besides K-pop, Korean Language and Culture have much preferred and learned by Indonesian teenagers. One of Traditional Korean Dance is Buchaechum (???) which is famous for its elegant and energetic fan dance. Buchaechum combines visual arts and elegance using a peony patterned fan and was performed by a group of women who wear traditional hanbok costumes. Buchaechum comes from the word “buchae” which means a fan and “chum” which means dance.

In Surabaya, Indonesia, KLCC Untag Surabaya is the only community that performed Buchaechum. KLCC stands for Korean Culture at the University of 17 Agustus 1945 Surabaya. As a community-based in college, the members are students who like Korean language and culture.KLCC’s Buchaechum team was formed in 2014 because of the requests for performing traditional Korean dance at Korean events or ceremonies in Surabaya.  

KLCC’s Buchaechum team combines Korean Culture and Indonesian Culture. This is reflected by the Hanbok used for this dance. KLCC’s Buchaechum costumes designed with a fusion of hanbok and batik. Batik is one of Indonesia’s icon. Batik word is originate from Javanese Tik means dot. Batik is the art of decorating cloth using wax and dye, but now on there have been many ways used to make batik, one of them is printed batik. In the world’s view, Batik is acknowledged as the part and cultural identity of Indonesia. In 2009, Batik has been established as Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.  Buchaechum’s costume is a hanbok but they made a little change at Jeogeori (???) with a batik pattern so it still showing a good combination between Korea-Indonesia.

Buchaechum KLCC team has done a lot of activity and performance, one of them as a participant at Dance Festival 2015 that has been held in Ciputra Hall Surabaya which is that event showed dances from any countries. -KimV-
